On Usability

Google Cache of a story linked by Daring Fireball of an initial experience with a Microsoft Surface, After reading that article, and thinking about how easy my iPhone was to use on day one, hell, sitting on the floor in the mall no less, I thought about something I hadn’t thought of in two years:… Continue reading On Usability

Safari 4 takes UI from Windows XP – But not in a good way

I love Apple, I really do. The recent beta release of Safari 4 has some really exciting features, such as faster javascript, a new Top Hits view and better history searching. However, in an attempt to steal some thunder from Google’s Chrome, Apple moved the task bar from below the bookmarks bar and replaced the… Continue reading Safari 4 takes UI from Windows XP – But not in a good way

TextExpander 2.4 fixes menu speed issues

Yes! I bought TextExpander awhile ago and liked it a lot, but eventually ditched it for Type It 4 Me, due to the speed issues with the TextExpander menu. TI4M is fine, but TextExpander’s preferences and shortcut setup is nicer. SmileOnMyMac, TextExpander’s publisher, is also very Portland Macintosh Users Group friendly, so I like supporting… Continue reading TextExpander 2.4 fixes menu speed issues

I ordered it via The Beaverton Mac Store, got my PMUG discount (5% for you PMUG members!), and also picked up AppleCare for my MacBook Pro. I’ll add more RAM and… Continue reading Ordered a Mac Pro!

How to fix screenshots from a broken scale value

From Tim: Don’t know whether you’ve ever tried: defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleDisplayScaleFactor 1.50 to set the global scaling (works pretty well except some apps actually go all fuzzy and others look fabulous)? It turns out it breaks the cmd-shift-4 to snapshot the screen and save the image to a file. The general advice if you… Continue reading How to fix screenshots from a broken scale value

Tom Dowdy has passed away

Unconfirmed reports state that Apple Engineer (QuickTime, iTunes and others) “suddenly” passed away. More information is not available at this time. According to Tom’s page he wrote the popular Darkside of the Mac screensaver. Tom worked for Apple for 17 years as of the last update of his page, more like 21 now.

Used 79% of my Apple iPhone credit!

I’ve been wanting a second Macbook Pro power adaptor for awhile, and the stores just don’t seem to have the new, smaller ones in stock, so I ordered it online. $79. Cool. I have $21 left over. Comes in 4-6 weeks. Sigh. 🙂

Want to send Apple feedback?

Here is a hidden URL to their feedback page. Ok so it is not all that hidden, but because many applications have a “Send us feedback” menu item, for those that do not, this will help you out: Apple’s product feedback page
